Sanford Health and Marshfield Clinic Health System have announced a nonbinding memorandum of understanding to merge and create a leading rural health system in the United States. The merger is expected to bring together nearly 56,000 employees, 56 hospitals, 4,300 providers, and two fully integrated health plans. The new entity will retain the Sanford Health name and be headquartered in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Sanford CEO Bill Gassen will lead the combined organization, while Marshfield interim CEO Brian Hoerneman will head the Marshfield region. This move aims to enhance rural healthcare through innovation, research, and substantial investments, continuing Sanford’s legacy of quality care in underserved areas. The merger is set to close by year-end, subject to regulatory review.
