Stonepeak, a prominent alternative investment firm, and CHC, a leading developer in battery energy storage, have announced the formation of a platform dedicated to the development, construction, and operation of energy storage projects in Japan. This collaboration aims to accelerate Japan’s power industry decarbonization, supported by a 20-year fixed revenue capacity market contract awarded through the Japanese government’s Long-term Decarbonization Auction. The platform will target the deployment of 1GW of battery energy storage systems (BESS) over the next five years, providing crucial support for grid stability and reliability. Stonepeak, with its extensive experience in renewable investment, and CHC, with its technical expertise and local network, are committed to achieving Japan’s carbon neutrality goals. Both firms have highlighted the significance of dependable BESS capacity in supporting a sustainable energy future. Legal counsel for the platform includes Ashurst for Stonepeak, White & Case LLP for CHC, and Greenberg Traurig, LLP for the joint platform.
