GI Partners, a prominent private equity firm, has finalized its acquisition of DQE Communications, a leading fiber network service provider in the Pittsburgh region. With the completion of this deal, announced in December 2023, Michael T. Sicoli has been named CEO of DQE, effective immediately. DQE Communications has been a subsidiary of Duquesne Light Holdings since 1997 and has grown to become the largest independent fiber provider in the surrounding regions, boasting a 4,700-route-mile network with ongoing expansion projects. The acquisition by GI Partners aims to support DQE’s continued growth and capitalize on the rising demand for high-bandwidth services, meeting the needs of a diverse customer base, including the enterprise, carrier, wireless, education, municipal, and government sectors. Michael Sicoli, with a seasoned background in telecommunications including leadership roles at Internap, GTT Communications, Sidera Networks, and RCN Corporation, is well-positioned to lead DQE into its next growth phase. His appointment is anticipated to drive operational excellence and transformational growth. GI Partners, established in 2001, manages over $43 billion in capital and invests across multiple strategies, including private equity, real estate, and data infrastructure, primarily focusing on the healthcare, services, software, technology, and life sciences sectors.
